Krona Strategic Outlook 2027 · Indonesia

2027 won’t reward the loudest brand. It will reward the most relevant one.

A data-driven briefing on the economy, the digital consumer and the AI shift that will redraw Indonesian marketing next year, and what to do about it.

01 — Why 2027 is different

Four forces converge, at the same time, for the first time.

Every year brings new trends. 2027 brings a change in the rules. Indonesian marketers will plan against a cautious consumer, a platform layer that increasingly answers on a brand’s behalf, a generation handover, and a digital market whose growth now comes from depth rather than reach.

A

The ambition–wallet gap

Between the target and the forecast sits a consumer who is spending carefully.

B

The answer engine era

−58%clicks to the top result when an AI Overview appears20

68% of US Google searches already end without a click19. AI Mode has been available in Bahasa Indonesia since September 202522. Discovery is moving from ten blue links to one synthesised answer.

C

The generation handover

~68%of Indonesians are Millennials, Gen Z or younger89

Gen Z (24.93%) and Millennials (24.34%) are now almost half the population9. The majority consumer is digital-native by default.

D

Reach is saturating

7.86Mnew internet users, 2024→25
6.0Mnew internet users, 2025→2610

With penetration at 81.72%, growth will come from deeper engagement and better conversion, not from new audiences.

Plus a new rulebook: the Personal Data Protection Law is fully in force27 and a Presidential Regulation on AI is being finalised26.

“In 2027, the first audience for your brand may not be a person. It may be an AI that decides what a person sees.”

02 — The economy: growth with a cautious wallet

The economy is growing. The consumer is guarding.

Headline growth looks resilient, but it is increasingly carried by the state. Household spending is growing more slowly, the middle class is thinning, and consumers are reallocating, not just cutting.

Q3 2026 growth by component, year on year 3
Government consumption+8.95%Government consumption: +8.95%

GDP (total)+5.47%GDP (total): +5.47%
Household consumption+5.04%Household consumption: +5.04%
Exports+4.59%Exports: +4.59%

Growth is increasingly state-led: household consumption, the traditional engine, is growing more slowly than the economy as a whole.

The 2027 budget also assumes Rp17,500/US$ and 2.5% inflation1. BI raised its rate from 4.75% to 5.75% in May–June 2026 to steady the rupiah (≈Rp17,985/US$ on 20 Oct); September inflation was 3.28%4.

What it means for marketing in 2027

  1. Sell value, prove value. Price-pack architecture, entry packs, bundles and clear “worth it” proof will outperform pure image advertising.
  2. Target the 142 million. The aspiring middle class is the largest, most digitally active growth segment: aspirational, yet price-sensitive.
  3. Budget for accountability. With higher rates and a weaker rupiah, CFOs will ask every rupiah of media to show return. Build measurement in before launch.
  4. Sell experiences. Spending is moving toward mobility, food and travel. Occasion-led, experiential storytelling wins share of wallet.
  5. Watch imported costs. Dollar-priced media, software and production get dearer, which gives local creators and local production an edge.

03 — Indonesia’s digital landscape & behaviour

235 million people online. Four behaviours that define them.

Indonesia’s digital market is now mainstream, mobile and multi-platform. The question for 2027 is no longer how to reach people online, but how to earn attention, trust and conversion inside the platforms they already live in.

Discovery is split almost evenly between search and social. 2025 ad spend reached US$6.97B, with digital at 52% and influencer marketing up 14.4%12.

01

Search everywhere

People search on Google, TikTok, Instagram and AI assistants. Brands must be findable, and consistent, in all of them.

02

Shoppertainment

Video and live commerce turn content into checkout. The ad, the store and the entertainment are now one format.

03

Chat-first relationships

With WhatsApp used by 92.7% of internet users11, conversation is the default interface for service, sales and loyalty.

04

The trust deficit

56.1% worry about telling real from fake online12. Verified proof, real reviews and credible voices become a competitive edge.

04 — AI adoption: the consumer has already moved

Indonesians adopted AI faster than most of the world. Brands are catching up.

AI is no longer a future channel in Indonesia. It is a daily habit, a workplace tool and, increasingly, the layer through which people search, compare and buy.

Search is becoming an answer

  • Oct 2024Google AI Overviews arrive in Indonesian search results22
  • Sep 2025AI Mode launches in Bahasa Indonesia22
  • 202668% of US Google searches end without a click19; in a randomised field experiment, AI Mode cut external click-through by 18.8 percentage points21
  • 2027Agentic commerce: Google and Sea (Shopee’s parent) are partnering on agentic AI for e-commerce25. AI starts to shop on the consumer’s behalf.

How brands need to adjust

  1. From SEO to “be the answer” (GEO). Optimise to be cited by AI: structured data, clear facts, FAQ-style content, and third-party mentions in the reviews, lists and media that AI models draw on.
  2. Design for zero-click. Assume fewer website visits. Put brand, offer and proof inside the answer, the search result, the video and the chat.
  3. Make products machine-readable. Clean product feeds, specs, pricing and availability so shopping agents can recommend and transact.
  4. Own the relationship. Build first-party data and consented communities (WhatsApp, membership, apps) under the PDP Law, because platforms now own more of the journey.
  5. Double down on human proof. In a feed full of synthetic content, real people, real reviews and real expertise become premium signals.

05 — The marketer in the AI era

AI doesn’t replace the marketer. It replaces the old operating model.

Budgets for AI are rising fast; the ability to turn them into value is not. The gap between experimenting and performing is now an operating-model problem, not a tooling problem.

15.3%of marketing budgets allocated to AI by CMOs23
30%of CMOs report mature AI readiness23
37%of organisations attribute any EBIT impact to AI24
~6%are “AI high performers”; nearly ¾ of them redesigned workflows, vs ¼ of others24

+ Upsides

  • Speed & scale: content variants, localisation and testing in hours, not weeks.
  • Precision: sharper segmentation, personalisation and next-best-action.
  • Insight: faster research, social listening and performance diagnosis.
  • Efficiency: lower cost per asset; teams freed for strategy and creativity.
  • Always-on service: AI-assisted chat commerce on WhatsApp and marketplaces.

− Downsides

  • Traffic erosion: zero-click answers reduce visits to brand-owned sites1920.
  • Sameness: the same tools produce the same content, and brand distinctiveness erodes.
  • Accuracy & brand safety: hallucinations and off-brand output need human control.
  • Trust & deepfakes: 56.1% already worry about fake content12.
  • Data & compliance: PDP Law duties on consent, processing and cross-border data27.
  • Hidden costs & skills gaps: 20% of firms say operating costs (incl. tokens) constrain AI use24.

Indonesian professionals are already pragmatic: 93% treat AI output as a starting point, not a final answer, and 85% worry about falling behind17.
